Laser Hair Removal: Difference Between Lasers and IPL Technology

Thursday, February 09, 2012

Lately, there had been a massive increase in Laser Clinics.  Competition became tougher that it became a price war in the industry.  It might sound like a boon for the consumers, but sadly many became victims of the improper use of lasers.  There was an increasing number of complaints of people getting burned, getting infections from open wounds and other laser horror stories as reported in a "A Current Affair".

Based on a clinical study, IPL hair removal treatments resulted in an increased frequency of complications.  Overall, it offered inferior results when compared to laser hair reduction.

The main difference of Intense Pulsed-Light (IPL)  devices to Laser is it exposes the patient to a broader spectrum of light energy defined by cut-off filters, typically in the range of 600-1200nm.  IPL needlessly exposes patients to some unnecessary and/or ineffective wavelengths of radiation and are lacking, by definition, the purity of treatment available with a single-wavelength laser.

Meanwhile, Lasers are single wavelength devices with absorption coefficients relatively specific to the chromophores they are intended to target. This makes its side-effect profile and dependability of response more superior than IPL devices.

With regards to hair removal, the results of IPL devices and Laser vary greatly. Mainly due to the different operating parameters i.e., wavelength, fluence, pulse duration, spot size or epidermal cooling methodologies.  On the basis of physician feedback and patient satisfaction,  the GentleLASE, was voted to have the "gold standard" in laser hair removal.

Did you have laser hair removal before?  Did your laser clinic used a Laser or an IPL device?  What was your experience like? Please share your feedback by leaving a comment or joining our forum.

Cheers,
